Fabrication Fitter
(No Layout Experience Required)
Build your future with Burkes Fabrication.
About the Role
As a Fabrication Fitter without layout experience at Burkes Fabrication, you will focus on assembling, fitting, tack-welding, grinding, and preparing fabricated components for final welding and assembly under direction from lead fitters and supervisors. This role prioritizes hands-on shop skills over independent layout responsibilities, making it a great entry point for fitters who are strong with tools and shop work and who want to grow into layout or welding roles.
Key Responsibilities
-
Position, align, clamp, and fit structural members, plate, and fabricated subassemblies for tack-up and welding.
-
Interpret basic fabrication drawings and work orders to follow fit-up sequences provided by leads.
-
Use grinders, hand tools, hoisting equipment, and jigs to prepare parts to weld-ready condition.
-
Perform dimensional checks and mark parts for fit-up; report layout tasks to layout specialists or leads.
-
Maintain a clean, safe workstation and follow site safety procedures and permitting for hot work and lifting.
Minimum Qualifications
-
High school diploma or equivalent.
-
1–3 years’ experience in a fabrication shop, welding support, or as an apprentice fitter is preferred.
-
Comfortable with hand tools, grinders, basic measuring tools, and following work instructions.
-
Able to lift, carry, and position heavy materials and work at heights or from lifts as required.
-
Willingness to learn layout fundamentals on the job to support career progression.
Preferred Training and Certifications
-
OSHA 10 for construction or general industry preferred.
-
Welding qualification or shop experience (SMAW, MIG, or FCAW) is a plus but not required for this role.
-
NCCER, trade school, or apprenticeship experience is advantageous.
What We Offer
-
Hands-on experience across a range of heavy-industry fabrication projects that builds core fit-up skills.
-
Clear training pathways: move from fitter support → independent fitter → layout or certified welder as you gain skills and tickets.
-
Safety-first culture with toolbox talks, on-the-job mentorship, and paid training opportunities for certifications and vendor courses.
-
Team-oriented shop environment with consistent supervision and opportunities to cross-train on tooling and shop equipment.
