About the Role
As a Mechanical Helper at Burkes Mechanical, you’ll support fitters, welders, and rigging crews by handling materials, preparing parts, and performing shop and field support tasks that keep fabrication and installation flowing. This entry-level role is hands-on and designed to build core trade skills through on-the-job training.
Key Responsibilities

Move, stage, and tag materials, parts, and pre-fab assemblies for fit-up and welding.

Assist fitters and welders with fit-up, tack-up prep, grinding, cleaning, and basic beveling.

Operate and maintain basic hand tools, grinders, torches, and portable power tools under supervision.

Help rig small lifts, set up tag lines, and secure loads for transport with guidance from rigging leads.

Clean and organize work areas, maintain consumables, and support shop housekeeping.

Complete basic dimensional checks, mark parts per instructions, and report defects or discrepancies.

Follow hot work permitting, lockout/tagout, PPE, and jobsite safety procedures; participate in toolbox talks.
Minimum Qualifications
-
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

0–2 years’ experience in fabrication, shop work, construction, or related hands-on roles preferred.

Comfortable lifting and moving heavy materials, using basic hand tools, and working in shop or outdoor industrial conditions.

Reliable, safety-focused, and able to follow written and verbal instructions.
Preferred Certifications and Training

OSHA 10 preferred.

Forklift (powered industrial truck) experience or certification a plus.

Basic welding shop exposure, NCCER helper credentials, or completion of a trade intro course advantageous.
