Mechanical Pipe Welder

About the Role

As a Mechanical Pipe Welder at Burkes Mechanical, you will weld, fit, and finish piping spools and assemblies used in heavy-industry systems. You will work from spool drawings and isometrics to produce welds that meet fabrication and code requirements, support NDT prep, and collaborate with fitters, QC, and layout techs to deliver shop-ready and field-ready spools.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform high-quality welds on piping spools, fittings, flanges, and assemblies using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW as required.

• Read and interpret spool drawings, isometrics, weld procedures, and joint detail sketches.

• Prepare joints for welding: fit-up, tack, bevel, clean, and align to dimensional tolerances.

• Support NDT preparation and cooperate with QA/QC during inspections and weld repairs.

• Maintain weld records, traceability (heat/joint numbers), and complete welding documentation.

• Maintain welding equipment, consumables, and perform basic pre-shift checks on welding machines.

• Participate in daily toolbox talks, follow hot work permitting, and stop any work that is unsafe.

Minimum Qualifications

• 2+ years of pipe welding experience in fabrication or heavy industrial settings preferred.

• Proven welding skills across common processes for pipe fabrication (SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW).

• Able to read basic spool/isometric drawings and follow written weld procedures.

• Comfortable working at heights and in shop or outdoor industrial conditions.

• Strong attention to weld quality, fit-up tolerances, and dimensional accuracy.

Preferred Certifications and Training

• Welding qualifications per employer or ASME Section IX (or support for qualification testing).

• NCCER welding curriculum, AWS welding certificates, or trade/apprenticeship credentials are a plus.

• OSHA 10 or 30, hot work awareness, confined space awareness, and other site-specific safety tickets as required.

• Experience with NDT processes and common inspection acceptance criteria preferred.
